Continuing my quest for a beer cocktail for week 2 of 52 weeks of mixology on Reddit I headed to Google and looked for Guinness cocktails.

One of the results was Guinness’ website and there I found the recipe for a Midnight:
– 35ml port
– 1 can of Guinness

The resulting drink is definitely mainly Guinness but with a hint of the port- on the first sip you get a hit of slight sweetness and a slight smell and taste of the port.
Overall its not a drastic change but the drink is less bitter and ‘dark’ than just Guinness with more body and a hint of fruity sweetness.

Campari Shandy

8 Mar

My second try at a beer cocktail for 52 weeks of Mixology is a Campari Shandy.

The recipe is easy:
2oz Campari
12oz beer
Lime wedge squeezed in

The taste is great- the Campari is still apparent but muted somewhat. The beer lightens and refreshes the drink and stops the Campari being so heavy or cloying.

This would be a great way to introduce someone to Campari and is a drink I’ll return to.

Texas Grapefruit Rattler

8 Mar

I’ve recently begun taking part in 52 weeks of mixology on Reddit where each week for a year a different theme will be given and participants will post photos, recipes and descriptions.
There’s still time to join as you can begin at any time and post a week up to 3 weeks late so dive in!

I’m now on week 2 (week 1 was themed ‘My favourite cocktail so of course I posted a Negroni) and the theme is beer.

Having not really made any beer cocktails I’m looking forward for an excuse to try some new recipes and following the links given in the theme post I came across todays drink: a Texas Grapefruit Rattler.

I used 1/4 cup/ 60ml of freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice and a bottle of Stella Artois.
I wasn’t sure what beer would work best so went with something easy though I’d be interested to try it again using a different beer. I’d also like to try it with the addition of some of my hopped grapefruit bitters to add further depth.

The resulting drink was fresh and refreshing. Bitter and sharp it took a few tries to get used to it but when I did I really enjoyed it. This would be great on a hot day and I’m sure I’ll make some more over the summer.

No Names To Protect The Not-So Innocent

2 May

The weather in New York at the moment is hot- very hot- and almost every day I have walked by a shop advertising beer ice lollies- what could be nicer?

Take my advice and steer clear!

Take my advice and steer clear!

Well the answer is anything but these. Unfortunately when frozen many things lose their sweetness, and alcohol seems to especially suffer from this. I’m guessing the beer used wasn’t sweet to begin with so the end result was the opposite of sweet but without any of the pleasure of a well-balanced bitter drink. I can’t believe the people selling these had actually tasted them as they were vile- the concoction tasted ugly bitter, gone-off and had no pleasure in them at all- and I can drink some weird and foul-tasting shit. This I had to throw away.

An ice-cold beer from the fridge just about made up for the horror of what I had tasted.

Pinche Taqueria

2 May

We discovered Pinche Taqueria on our trip to New York last year as we walked by it on a day out and soon returned the next day to feast on their freshly cooked Mexican food. So a return visit this year was definitely on the cards and today we managed it.

Their menu encompasses a wide range of freshly made dishes and many specials for lunch etc.

This year we dined on fish tacos, yucca fries, quesadillas and tamales all washed down with Negra Modelo.

I am eternally in search of somewhere in London that produces fresh, flavourful Mexican food such as this with it being so anglicised and carb-laiden beyond all recognition. I can only dream.

Ikea Shopping

22 Sep

I’m always on the look out for different drinks so a trip to IKEA was no exception.

I managed to bag elderflower, rhubarb and blueberry cordials to use in future cocktails as well as a new dark beer they sell. As you can see the beer didn’t last long enough for the photo!

The beer has a smooth caramel and coffee taste but was a lot lighter/ less substantial than other dark beers but I wouldn’t turn it down.

Trio D’Vie

20 Aug

I like beer and I like Eau de Vie so when offered the two combined I couldn’t resist trying it.

Lunch was at and the beer on offer was brewed by Brasserie De La Somme and called Trio D’Vie . You can see it on this page where it is described as:

“A special beer in exclusivity: it is full-bodied, it swings… As its name indicates, it is subtly flavoured with the 3 waters of life! (Cognac, Calvados and PoirĂ©). It is a triple triple amber beer”

A very rough translation!

The beer was pretty strong at 7.7% but was light and refreshing to drink. There was a definite fruit and spirit taste to the drink and the flavours combined nicely.

Here are some websites where you can purchase it.
