Deconstructed Negroni

Another drink for Negroni Week and this time it’s a Deconstructed Negroni from the Eric Felten book ‘How’s your drink’The recipe is:

  • 1 1/2 oz gin
  • 11/2 Lillet Blanc

Stirred over ice and then topped with a foam made of:

  • 1 egg white 
  • 2oz strained grapefruit juice
  • 1oz Aperol
  • 2 tsp orange bitters

I whisked the egg white until stiff then added the other ingredients and continued whisking. 


This makes a delicious drink with a lovely, tasty foam. After a few sips I poured the separated foam into the rest of the drink- delicious!

My review of this cocktail from last months Shaken Cocktails kit comes with a disclaimer – I hate Whisky.
Or more accurately it hates me. Something in it makes me nauseous at s minimum (as does anything smoked/ peaty or truffles- if anyone knows the link please let me know!) it never used to and I miss it dearly

But this drink sounded so good I thought, in the interests of science of course, I’d at least give it a ago. And it was worth it.

The recipe is:
– 50ml Whisky
– 10ml Velvet Falernum
– 15ml Aperol
– 10 drops Angostura bitters
All stirred over ice

The end result was delicious- warming and slightly spicy. Whisky with a hint of Orange with a great spiced ‘burn’ as the aftertaste.
Well worth it.

Stolen Negroni

On my never-ending quest to try every possible Negoni variation tonights drink is a Stolen Negroni

The recipe is simple: equal parts Cynar, Aperol and gin and the taste is similar to a Negroni with its nuanced bitterness but the Cynar adds an extra herbal dimension and the drink is overall less sweet than a regular Negroni but no more or less bitter.

This is a drink I’ll return to
